Zero suicide promotes basic strategies of clinical care for suicidal individuals. The AIM (Assess-Intervene-Monitor) model incorporates empirically supported clinical tools that address clinical components of Zero Suicide. This session will train participants in three widely used suicide prevention tools: the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), the Safety Planning Intervention and Follow up Monitoring:
    1. The C-SSRS is an easy to use assessment of suicidal ideation and behavior that has been shown to reliable and predictive of suicidal behavior. Administration of the C-SSRS will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to address questions in administration and classification. 2. The Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) is the most widely used brief intervention to help suicidal individuals handle suicidal crises. The SPI, evaluated in the VA SAFE VET project, shows that suicidal behavior was reduced by 44% in Veterans visiting the Emergency Room for a suicidal crisis. The participants will have the opportunity to observe trainers demonstrate techniques and to practice skills themselves.
    3. Follow up monitoring is a simple strategy to fill the gap between initial assessment of suicidal individuals and subsequent care. Individuals remain at high risk following a suicide attempt or acute suicidal crisis. Follow up monitoring provides straightforward phone support for a brief period. Calls are brief (about 10 minutes) and address current risk, review the use of the SPI and help facilitate treatment engagement.

The crisis response plan (CRP) is a brief intervention designed to prevent suicidal behavior in at-risk individuals. Results of a recently-completed randomized clinical trial conducted in a sample of active duty military personnel support the efficacy of CRP as compared to treatment as usual, and indicate the CRP reduced suicide attempts among military personnel by 76% as compared to treatment as usual. This half-day workshop is designed to enhance participants' knowledge about crisis response planning for managing acute suicide risk, and to increase their ability to confidently and competently administer this intervention with at-risk military personnel. The workshop provides describes the development and conceptual basis of the CRP, reviews published studies and forthcoming studies supporting its efficacy, and provides concrete strategies and tips to help clinicians effectively implement the intervention. The workshop includes demonstrations by the instructor and skills practice by attendees, which are designed for participants to acquire skill competency. All participants will receive a pocket handbook providing tips and suggestions for effective use of the CRP after training.

This session will focus on the needs of those with lived experience of suicide (suicide attempt survivors) as well as those who have experienced a suicide loss. The session will incorporate film clips of those speaking about their experiences, along with information about the distinct challenges faced by those with lived experience and suicide loss survivors, and discuss strategies for providing support to both groups.
